please note:
1. Legal Society Constitution and Aims (Nov. 2001), contains statements defining the legality of SHHECom. It was produced by the Founding Committee members Jeffery Gale Hon Sec. Neil King Hon. Treas, and the Industrial Common Ownership Movement. This document defines the running of meetings, committees, voting procedures with a view to legal registration. Copies are available for £1 (to cover costs).
2. We have registered our ` Benefit for the Community Not for Profit Society with the registrar of Friendly Societies (London) through the sponorship of the Industrial common Ownership Movement Ltd (ICOM).
3. To provide the general public with a wide range of holistic educational workshops, courses and sessions, some complementary health services. To build a good example of a sustainable eco-spiritual community.
4. To build an ecologically and economically self-sustaining Holistic Education Community on 5 acres (suggested minimum) or more in the South Hams region of Devon, preferably near Totnes. This may take the form of a purchase of a large characterful country house with outbuilding(s) to be used as accommodation while our eco-homes are being built.
5. Residents and members of SHHECom are required to purchase a £1 share in the community, having thereby the right to participate in decision-making, usually by consensus. Any interested person or organisation can invest any preferred sum by purchasing a £1 share and becoming an occasional participant, perhaps giving or receiving holistic services and consultancies.
6. We aim to attract capital investment by members in order to fund the purchase of land/buildings, building materials, plants and our own wages. Through these means (section 4 and 5) members can invest their energies, ideas, collateral and cash towards building eco-homes and Holistic Education Centre.
7. That SHHECom members and visitors provide a range of educational experiences with a holistic approach. The following indicate what may be possible:
Various natural healing courses and complementary health consultancies.
Self-build eco-housing, cyclic energy and waste systems.
Water purification.
Intuitive insight watercolour painting for deeper self exploration.
Singing, circle dancing, voice work and song writing. Excellent ways to
build self-confidence and social skills.
Small business start-up. Skills needed.
Permaculture design, introductory sessions and follow-up experiential courses with experienced tutors leading to a p/c design diploma.
Woodlands and forest care - holistic approaches with experienced tutors.
Produce based vegetarian cooking sessions and holistic healthcare.
Stress management sessions; various methods (some of the above) such as Tai Chi, meditation, walking meditation, singing together, intuitive painting and other crafts.
Introducing co-operative, spiritual and creative methods into the workplace and schools.
Mutual learning and decision making.
Initiating a World Peace Garden.
Starting a small school and home education.
8. We hope that our community will demonstrate to the general public the many ways that local economies can be restored and sustained in the South Hams region. That this enables all ages to contribute their imaginative and creative work in diverse and interesting ways. That this will help sustain rural abundance, commerce and social life. It is hoped that the community will act as an inspirational model of locally sustained ways of life for the region, both economically and ecologically.
9. All community members can run or take part in these courses, sessions and workshops according to their skills and interests. A collectively agreed equal rate of pay can be paid to all course, workshop or session leaders / tutors, (payments made to course, workshop or session leaders / tutors will usually come from course fees). SHHECom will charge for the use of workshop space, revenue will be paid into the SHHECom bank account.
10. The same hourly rate can be paid to those members building eco-homes and Centre buildings and managing gardens and woodlands. The community treasurer will be responsible for paying and accounting for wages. A large part of wages will eventually come form course and workshop fees, possibly subsidised by grants.
11. The treasurer will be responsible for recording all income in the community accounts book. The treasurer will also make careful records of all expenditure (wages, equipment, materials etc.).
12. We hope to meet our transport needs by sharing vehicles that are run on eco-friendly fuels.
13. It is envisaged that 6 to 8 homes will be built for member families and individuals. This limits the number of adult members to around 12. The extramural membership may have to be limited to about 30 to enable Annual General Meetings to be fully attended.
14. Some members are keen to start a small on-site school and play-group for the under 5s.
15. All the land and non-residential buildings will remain under freehold of SHHECom. However, resident members have the right to sell the equity value of their home if they decide to leave. The sale value has to be agreed by a consensus at a General Meeting. There is a minimum membership period of 3 years. Only bona fide new community members can purchase or rent a home. To secure a home members pay what they can afford as advance rent, at least one month and a deposit, to the Treasurer.
16. We will also build within the main Education Centre Building, an organic vegetarian restaurant and cafe adjoining, served by a spacious and well-equipped kitchen. Members who enjoy cooking can choose to be a manager for set periods. Members can choose to help with food preparation or other jobs in the kitchen, cafe, dining room on their preferred days. Similarly, communal spaces and gardens can be maintained by members. All hours worked will be paid at the SHHECom hourly rate. The restaurant will be open to both members and non-members.
17. SHHECom hourly rate of pay will be set at a General Meeting. A Business Plan has been prepared but is now in need of revision in the light of changed figures.
Further details of the philosophy, ethics and vision of SHHECom are available in the document "Community, Love and Self-Fulfillment" by Jeffrey Gale.
